The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) fiscal year 2016 solid waste report shows Arbor Hills Landfill in Salem Township, Washtenaw County is indeed the largest dump, by volume, in the state.
Washtenaw County imported over 90% of the trash collected at Arbor Hills Landfill last year. Only 9.2% of the dump’s total volume is from Washtenaw County.
The report shows a 3.1% overall increase in solid waste disposed compared to FY 2015. Waste imported from other states and Canada also increased by almost 7.5 percent. Canada continues to be the largest source of waste imported, representing 18.1 percent of all waste disposed of in Michigan landfills.
